Woodcut Illustrations in Children's Books

I love woodcut illustrations (and linocut and scratchboard...). This form of printmaking lends itself to illustration in children's books. My posts this week will focus on different woodcut artists who have done children's books.

Below is a sampling of different children's books with woodcut illustrations. Tomorrow I will show work by woodcut artist, Mary Azarian.

  1. I LOVE woodcuts! Maybe someday I'll learn how to make one. Also, scratchboard is wonderful! There's a book called "Antler, Bear, Canoe" that is full of woodcuts. I can't remember the author's name, but she has several books for children that I read to my kids years ago. Love the pictures!

  2. I've been reading about Ashely Wolff. She works in different mediums, but I like her wood/linoleum block print illustrations the best. Margaret Perry recommended a book by John Lawrence a while back ("Tiny's Big Adventure"). She's recommended Mary Azarian many times, as well. Can't wait!

  3. Lisa - Betsy Bowen is the artist of Antler, Bear, Canoe. You're doing well to remember the title! I have a couple of her books, but I don't have that one.

Stephanie - I like the work of Ashley Wolff too, I have her A Year of Birds book. I would agree with you about the linocuts.

  4. Thanks for featuring these! I'm a block print artist/illustrator who, naturally, loves the look of these relief prints. I've been building up a list of alphabet books illustrated with block prints. You can see them here: http://nydamprintsblackandwhite.blogspot.com/2011/03/abcs-of-block-printing.html and more samples here: http://nydamprintsblackandwhite.blogspot.com/search/label/ABC
