Caterpillars, Butterflies and Snails, Oh My!

My apologies for the infrequent posting of this past month or so. I've had a variety of family issues to deal with and as the saying goes, when it rains, it pours. But family comes first, so if you will bear with me for a while, I will post when I can and hopefully work up to a summer schedule of three posts a week. I am still without a scanner, but that should be resolved before too long.

Working in the garden inspired me to look for illustrations of caterpillars, butterflies and snails. Hope you enjoy these, I think they are exceptional.

The Great Big Fire Engine Book, Tibor Gergely

Today's vintage children's book, The Great Big Fire Engine Book, was illustrated by Hungarian artist Tibor Gergely. Published in 1950, the big, bright and action packed illustrations must have been a huge hit with children back then.

Punch and the Magic Fish, Emanuele Luzzati

Today's vintage children's book, Punch and the Magic Fish, is a retelling of the
Grimm Brother's tale. I can't find any date in my book, but I'm guessing it's from
the 1960's. The illustrator, Italian born Emanuele Luzzati (1921- 2007), was according to Wikipedia, a painter, production designer, illustrator, film director and animator.

Luzzati's illustrations are so exuberant and well composed. I love his use of
mixed media. This is my first encounter with Luzzati and I want to see more
of his work.
