The Mitten, Yaroslava

Today's vintage children's book is The Mitten, illustrated by Yaroslava. Born Aka Yaroslava Surmach, she often was credited as Yaroslava in her books. Besides being an illustrator, Yaroslava was an art director/editor for the children's magazine Humpty Dumpty. She created stained glass windows for the St. Demetrius Ukranian Catholic church in Toronto, and the glass entrance doors to the New York Senate Building. Yaroslava's reverse glass paintings were made into greeting cards. To read more about Yaroslava, click here.

  1. Though Jan Brett's version of the story is more popular, I always check this one out, too.

  2. I've been looking for this book for my 29 year old daughter. This was her favorite book as a child. Does anyone have it for sale? It has to be THIS version.

  5. I wasn't familar with the one by Jim Aylesworth, so I googled it. I like the exuburance of the boy in that version. The version illustrated by Yaroslava is my favorite also. I like her line drawings and use of color.
