Today's vintage children's book is Judge Pao by Elaine Andrews, with beautiful illustrations by Errol Le Cain (1941-1989). Le Cain was born and educated in Singapore, but had no formal art training. Growing up in Singapore must have helped him in illustrating this book. It has a very authentic feel and I like his use of pattern and color. Le Cain won a Kate Greenaway Award in 1985 for his illustrations in Hiawatha's Childhood.
I have not seen Errol Le Cain's work before and was surprised to find a very nice website about him and the many books he illustrated. Such a shame he died young, he was obviously a talented individual.
