Today's vintage children's book, The Nest Book, is from 1968 and was written by Kathleen N. Daly and illustrated by Jan Pfloog. Pfloog, (who I don't have any info on at this time) had some serious illustrating skills. It's puzzling to me how information on someone who illustrated many children's books cannot be found on the internet!

Hi, can i ask you something? You seem to know a lot about children books and illustrations. The thing is, I’m looking for children books with “scary” animal illustrations like the big bad wolf (or a fox) eating pigs (or seven kids or Red Riding hood or birds in Chicken Little) or being pictured with a fat stomach. Could be any other animal as well. I need it for my research. Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Such gorgeous illustrations! Jan Pfloog is a pseudonym for Jan Lööf, a very prolific artist, illustrator, author and jazz musician.
ReplyDeleteJan Pfloog is actually the pen name of my great uncle Scott Johnston. He graduated from the art institute of Chicago approx. 100 years ago. He was married to Johanna Johnston another children’s author.
DeleteThanks for the info Cathryn!
ReplyDeletePfloog illustrated The Golden Book of Zoo animals under his real name, Scott Johnston.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if my last comment posted, but I want to correct Cathryn. Jan Pfloog is actually a pen name for Scott Johnston, who is my great-great-uncle.
